I am using Arch Linux with GNOME 3.20. I am trying to get a network manager applet (tray-icon) using which I could easily connect to WiFi networks. I installed networkmanager and network-manager-applet but I am not getting any tray icon.

Linux servers don’t run GNOME. Network Manager initially does nothing until the network state changes, (including yum update) then unless “ifcfg-*” file has “NM_CONTROLLED=NO” the NM will take control of the link and drop it because nobody is logged in to gnome, and take the next available network port.

An Alternative to Ubuntu network manager is systemd-networkd, which is the default backend service in Ubuntu server 18.04. So if you want to disable the NetworkManager, then the networkd service should be enabled, while it is better to disable networkd service when network manager is running.
